PFRPG Character Generator Web App

Posted by Mad Brew On November - 2 - 2010

Wow, there’s a lot of dust around here!

Things have been pretty busy elsewhere in my life, so I have unfortunately had to concentrate my energies there. But enough excuses, let’s get to the RPG-related content.

ENnies Blog Shout-out

First, I’d like to give a shout-out (back?) to Tony Law and the ENnies Blog. Tony interviewed me (and many other ENnie nominees and winners) and the interview went live this morning. The interview was completed before I gave my controlling interest in Nevermet Press to Jonathan Jacobs, who is now the sole proprietor.

Pathfinder RPG App

Even though the Labs appear to have been abandoned since GenCon, I can assure you I have only secreted myself away from the villagers with their burning torches and nasty pitchforks while I gave life to my newest endeavor.

If you cannot tell from the screenshots, it is a web-based character generator for the Pathfinder RPG. I cannot say when I’ll be finished; I am currently on my 3rd re-write of the code at the moment in an attempt to get the app to perform decently on any browser but Chrome (Chrome IS the fastest browser when complex JavaScript routines are concerned).

The character generation takes place completely on the client side through the liberal application of JavaScript until the final step where the app creates a PDF of the character and stores it for a limited time on the server (the app automatically redirects to the (Character Gen Sample) PDF in the browser).

Character Sheet

Here is the list of features that have been developed so far:

  • Point buy Ability Score calculation (though you are free to break it)
  • Favored Bonus points distribution (including Half-Elf bonus favored class)
  • All racial features for the 7 Core Races
  • All selectable class features for  the 11 Core Classes
  • Validation logic for all 176 Core Feats
  • Skill bonus calculation
  • Saving Throws, BAB, CMB, & CMD calculation
  • Hit Point calculation using ½ Hit Die + 1 (and max HPs at 1st level)
  • Save to PDF

As far as things to come, I want to add equipment and spell selection, with automated calculations for attack, damage, and save DCs. I plan on introducing Traits from the PDF enhancement as well. I also want to look into implementing random Ability Score generation options as well as random options for Hit Points.

Since I am in the middle of development, I do not want to reveal the project’s web address (it is actually live), but any parties interested in testing the app when the time comes, feel free to leave a comment below. I would also like to thank the handful of people who have already given me feedback on the project during its infancy.

For now, I’m sticking to the core rulebook only. Once the core rules are hammered out, then I will consider adding material from other sourcebooks. The core of the web app will certainly be free, but I am considering charging a small fee to store characters in a database.

ENnies Awards

I voted, have you?

The 2010 ENnies Awards at GenCon should be called the Year of Pathfinder. While the very awesome Year of the Shadow Lodge event was taking place at Pathfinder Society, Paizo took home 12 awards (10 Gold and 2 Silver and totally swept the Best Monster/Adversary category) and non-Paizo Pathfinder related products took earned Pathfinder another 3 (KW, City Guide, & d20PFSRD) awards for a total of 14 Gold and 3 Silver ENnies! In fact, only a single product from Paizo, Campaign Coins, didn’t place.

The ENnies began with a special a Special Recognition Award to DTRPG for their efforts raising money for Haitian relief… which really recognizes the charity of all the gamers that bought the Haiti Bundle that allowed DriveThru to donate to the cause.

The following is the list of award winners. I’ve bolded winners that matched my picks, but congratulations to all the winners!

ENnies Awards

I voted, have you?

This year’s ENnies Awards are now open for voting! Below are my picks (second place entries in parentheses) and some commentary.

  1. Best Cover Art – Rogue Trader Core Rulebook (Eclipse Phase)
This year, I think the Sci-Fi settings had the best cover art, hands down.
  2. Best Interior Art – Rogue Trader Core Rulebook (Warhammer FRPG)
The dark gritty art of the Warhammer universe continues its legacy of powerful imagery.
  3. Best Cartography – Pathfinder City Map Folio (Aces & Eights: Judas Crossing)
I want big poster sized maps of Golarion. Paizo has some excellent cartographers.
  4. Best Writing – Kerberos Club (Fantasy Craft)
I have a really big soft spot for Victorian fantasy…
  5. Best Production Values – Pathfinder Core Rulebook (Eclipse Phase)
PFRPG is really top notch work, which seems to be a hallmark of Paizo products.
  6. Best Rules – Hero 6th
I’m a huge fan of crunch, and it doesn’t get more crunchy than Hero.
  7. Best Adventure – Pathfinder AP #31: Stolen Land (The Grinding Gear)
Both of these are old school style adventures. Kingmaker marks the first sandbox style Adventure Path.
  8. Best Monster/Adversary – Pathfinder: Classic Horrors Revisited (Pathfinder Bestiary)
When it comes to baddies, the classic horrors don’t disappoint.
  9. Best Setting – Kerberos Club (Gobling Markets)
Remember that soft spot for Victorian fantasy?
  10. Best Supplement – Rebellion Era Campaign Guide (Mysteries of Hollow Earth)
The Star Wars SAGA went out with a bang when they released the sourcebook for the classic trilogy.
  11. Best Aid or Accessory – Campaign Coins (Gaming Paper)
I covet those coins, don’t know what I’d really do with them, but they’re shiny!
  12. Best Miniature Product – Alkemy Minis (Fortress of Redemption)
The Alkemy minis have some excellent sculpts.
  13. Best Regalia – Grind (Buried Tales of Pine Box, Texas)
A board game of steam-powered destruction!
  14. Best Electronic Book – Shambles (The Great City Player’s Guide)
It’s about time a game embraced being the zombie!
  15. Best Free Product – Wayfinder #1 (Advanced Players Guide Playtest)
Wayfinder is an excellent magazine made by PFRPG fans.
  16. Best Website – d20PFSRD.com (Pathfinder Wiki)
These sites have been essential for my PFRPG gaming needs.
  17. Best Podcast – NewbieDM (Open Design)
I think Newbie has a great format with his short mini-casts.
  18. Best Blog – Kobold Quarterly (NewbieDM)
KQ churns out a lot content, that I’ve actually used.
  19. Best Game – Pathfinder (Hero 6th)
I think the combination of solid rules and great fan support from Paizo make PFRPG the best game.
  20. Product of the Year – Pathfinder (Eclipse Phase)
I’ve said enough about PFRPG, but Eclipse Phase is a close second because of how they published their rules.
  21. Best Publisher – Paizo (Pinnacle Entertainment Group)
Paizo has captured many a fan’s heart through their dedication to their player base.

Congratulations to all the nominees and good luck in the voting.

Ennies: The Underdog

Posted by Mad Brew On July - 24 - 2009
09 Ennie Nominee

09 Ennie Nominee

The Ennies open up for voting today, and as many of you know, this blog was nominated for the Best Website category. I must say I am pretty flattered to be nominated because it puts my creation next to websites created by a couple of my favorite game designers: Wolfgang Baur (Kobold Quarterly) and Monte Cook (Dungeon-a-Day). Not to mention the big dog blog Critical-hits and the campaign wiki Obsidian Portal.

So after looking at the list of competitors in the category, I think it is safe to say I’m the underdog. Which is totally awesome because I feel like I have nothing to lose; in my mind I have already won by securing the nomination. Not only that, but it is a win for the RPG Bloggers Network, which has secured two of the five nominations this year. Hopefully this leads to a blog specific category next year, or not, if we can truly play with the big dogs. It’s open for debate.

That being said, I do ask my readers to support the Labs by taking a moment of their time and voting for this blog at the Ennies Awards site. The only thing better than being nominated would be having the underdog win, causing a major upset. I think we all love to see the small guy win sometimes (just this time it happens to be me!).

If you’re looking for a reason to vote for the Labs, I have several “selling points.” I think the biggest strength of this blog is that I’m not ad-supported, mono-gamist, or commercial in any fashion. I do promote products I like, but I don’t feel like I come away feeling like a propaganda machine for some corporation. I like to think I give everything a fair shake. So get your ass over to the Ennies site and make sure to vote.

Ennie Nominee

2009 Ennie Nominee!

2009 Ennie Nominee!

That’s right; Mad Brew Labs was nominated for a prestigious Ennie Award in the Best Website category! I am pretty ecstatic about the nomination because I’m competing against some big names and excellent sites including fellow RPGBN member Critical Hits, campaign wiki site Obsidian Portal, Monte Cook’s Dungeon-a-Day, and Wolfgang Baur’s Kobold Quarterly website.  That’s pretty impressive considering the number of other bloggers and websites that entered.

I’m asking all of my readers, as well as the entire RPG Blogger’s Network, to go vote for the Ennies between July 24th and August 1st. I would like to see the RPGBN grab the honor of winning this year, so while it would be awesome if you vote for me, I think it would benefit our community if either Criticals Hits or Labs was able to accept the Ennie. If we prove to be the serious contenders we know we are, perhaps next year they will give bloggers their own category.

I’ll remind everyone again when voting opens up, but until then I would like to thank all my readers, the RPG Bloggers Network, my gaming group (what’s left of them), and especially wife and daughter for allowing me to pursue this time consuming hobby!
